On Wednesday October 22, Bergen CASA hosted Embracing Independence Day, our annual event for foster youth to learn, connect, and have fun as they prepare for independence. Despite some last- minute venue challenges, the event at 2 Bergen County Plaza turned out to be our best yet.
The day kicked off with an inspiring keynote by Greg Lucas from Joy Roots, Director of Social and Emotional Learning at New Visions for Public Schools. Greg’s talk was funny, motivating, and educational, perfectly setting the tone for the day.
Youth then explored the Youth Resource Spot website, developed by former and current foster youth in collaboration with the Division of Children and Families. The site is packed with valuable information and links, and hearing Lillie, one of our former foster youth, encourage teens to join the Youth Council was incredibly empowering.
Afterwards, the teens enjoyed a vendor fair for resources and contacts, lunch provided by Jersey Mike’s, and a raffle of gift cards. They also visited the Sheriff’s mobile unit and got hands-on experiences like fingerprinting. Later in the afternoon, a fun youth vs. caseworker cornhole tournament capped off the day.
The event ran like clockwork despite last-minute setup challenges, and we received very positive feedback from the youth. And thanks to For Goodness Cakes, the day ended with the perfect sweet touch — cupcakes!
Embracing Independence Day is more than an event — it’s an opportunity to provide foster youth with tools, inspiration, and support as they take steps toward independence.
