How is CASA different from DCP&P (Department of Child Protection and Permanency)?

To really understand why CASA is so important, it helps to know a little about the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P) and what they do.

DCP&P has a critical job. Their focus is on family preservation—keeping children with their parents whenever possible. They’ll go to great lengths to place children with relatives, exploring every family option before considering foster care. And that policy? It’s a good one.

In Bergen County, we’ve seen a dramatic decrease in the number of kids being removed from their families over the last eight years, which is a testament to the success of this approach.

But here’s the thing—DCP&P must follow policy. And sometimes, policies and a child’s best interest don’t always line up.
